New CompTIA Certification

CompTIA is developing a new advanced security certification exam to follow the current Security+ certification.  The Advanced Security Certification is intended for professionals with 10 years IT experience;  including at least five years of hands on Security experience.

CompTIA is currently seeking Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to provide assistance in the CompTIA Advanced Security Item Development Workshop November 1st – 5th, 2010. Comptia says  "It is the on-the-job experience of SMEs that will provide the CompTIA Advanced Security exam with the precise skills standards required to perform the job of an advanced security practitioner. SME participation provides validity to the certifications used by employers, consumers, IT and vertical industries, making them widely recognized and a valued benchmark for candidates."

SME Requirements:
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience working in enterprise level security management.
  • Must have strong communication and written English skills (grammar/spelling)
  • Must have the ability to commit to a 5-day (8 hours per day) workshop.
  • Must agree to sign a non-disclosure agreement enforced for a period of three years (NDA).
  • Must submit an updated resume that highlights your enterprise level security technology experience to be considered for this role.

No word on when the Advanced Security Certification will be available.

Microsoft MCDST to Retire

The Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST) certification is scheduled to retire March 31, 2011.  According to Microsoft, those currently holding MCDST certification "can upgrade your certification to include a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certification and a Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) certification by passing just one exam. These added certifications help validate your comprehension of the functions and features of the Windows Vista operating system, your ability to deploy and support Windows Vista and your skills related to troubleshooting network connectivity and applications issues within Windows Vista."

Two required exams will expire with the certification:
  • 70-271: Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Windows XP Operating System
  • 70-272: Supporting Users and Troubleshooting Desktop Applications on a Windows XP Operating System

Department of Defense Directive 8570 (DoD 8570.1)

The US Department of Defense issued Directive 8570  in 2004 to mandate baseline certifications for all  Information AssuranceIA positions.  In February of 2010, this directive was enhanced to include the Certified Ethical Hacker. The Department of Defense’s (DoD) Directive 8570.1 requires all individuals possessing privileged access to a DoD Information System (IS) to be skilled and certified in the secure operation of computer systems used throughout its Global Information Grid. Failure to meet the certification provisions could mean loss of position for individuals and possible loss of Congressional funding for agencies.

CompTIA partners with Linux Professional Institute

In April CompTIA announced a new partnership with  the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), the world's leading Linux certification organization.

Under the terms of the agreement CompTIA will adopt LPIC-1 exams (LPI-101 and LPI-102) for the new CompTIA Linux + Powered by LPI certification. CompTIA LX0-101 and LX0-102 exams will be offered at the same price as LPIC-1 exams. Consequently, those passing the CompTIA Linux+ powered by LPI exams will qualify for both the CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI certification and the LPIC-1 certification.

The CompTIA Linux+ exam, XK0-002 has been retired in Japan and will be retired in all other parts of the world, all languages, on October 31, 2010.

CompTIA Adds Windows 7 to A+ Exam

CompTIA will add Windows 7 questions  to  the existing A+ exams. Windows 7 questions will be added to the existing A+ exams (220-701 & 702) and will not require a new version of either exam to be created. The previous exam covered Windows 2000, Windows XP (32bit and 64bit) and Windows Vista (32bit and 64bit). The information will be added to the exam without removing any previous material.   CompTIA will update CompTIA A+ certification exams with new content related to the Windows 7 operating system beginning in January 2011. Changes for SUN Microsystems

CompTIA Bridge Exam to Expire

In late 2008 CompTIA released an updated Security+ exam. Followed were updates to A+ and Network+ in early  2009.  IT professionals who are encouraged or required by their employers to remain current on their certifications have had two options: They can take the new version of the exam, or they can take the CompTIA  bridge exam, which covers the new objectives.

As of December 31, 2010, the Bridge exams will retire.  Any IT professional who wishes to update their certification must take the Bridge on or before December 31, 2010.  After retirement only the full 2008/2009 exam will be available.

Only professionals who are currently ;
  • CompTIA A+ certified by taking 220-601 and one of the following: 220-602, 220-603 and 220-604 exams, 
  • CompTIA Security+ certified under 2002 exam objectives or
  • CompTIA Network+ certified under the 2005 objectives
are eligible to become CompTIA certified by taking the bridge exam.

CompTIA Certification Renewal Policy



As of January 1, 2011, CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications will be valid for three years from the date the candidate becomes certified. A “valid through” date will appear on all certificates and certificate holder CompTIA ID cards. Individuals certified on or before December 31, 2010 in CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+ will retain their "certified for life" status. No valid through date will appear on certificates and certificate holder CompTIA ID cards.
